This lecture is about revitalisation of indigenous languages in Oceania but the thoughts apply to African languages as well. The main contention is that language teaching should take precedence over documentation in the view of gaining new speakers of the language.

This is a video of a lecture by Professor Leanne Hinton who is currently a visiting fellow at the Australian National University.
The lecture describes practical issues in reclaiming indigenous languages based on her experience in Training the Trainers workshops in Alice Springs and in NW Australia. This is of course relevant to language maintenance issues discussed in Topics 5-6.
Prof. Hinton also describes (briefly) some global aspects concerning indigenous languages, touching on the different situation encountered on mainland USA and in Australia (both home to hundreds of languages in the past) in contrast with Hawaii and New Zealand (home to one indigenous language each).
Personally, I was most touched by the emphasis on language teaching as more important than language documentation, a point that we need to keep in mind as budding linguists.
